ABOUT
RUBBISH!
MISSION & HISTORY
The mission of Rubbish is to build community through fun and educational events focused on sparking conversation and engagement around issues of trash and the power of individual impact.
Rubbish was first started in 2019 by Blakeley Massey with a clean-up, happy hour, and raffle in Portland, Maine's bayside neighborhood. The events quickly took off, gaining support from local businesses and a large community of litter-picking volunteers. In 2020, Blakeley passed the Rubbish reins off to Laura Marston, the owner of GoGo Refill. Despite pandemic challenges, the project continued to grow. In 2021, Laura brought Lexi Doudera and Saltwater Classroom in as collaborators.
In its current form, Rubbish is a collaborative project of Saltwater Classroom and GoGo Refill. It is a charitable mission with fiscal sponsorship under Saltwater Classroom's 501(c)3 designation.

OUR PARTNERS
Rubbish is made possible through the support of our Partners throughout the years. These kind folks in our community have not only hosted our clean-up events, but have contributed financially as well. Plain and simple, it wouldn't be possible without these sustainability leaders! We cheers to you!
"What happens to all the trash?"
We rely on our fantastic friends at the City of Portland to help us dispose of the trash. After our litter-pickers clean an area and we consolidate the debris, the crew from the City comes to pick up the trash on their nightly route. This is a HUGE HELP for us and makes our efforts possible! Thank you to the City of Portland!
